Environmental Impact Assessment
Environmental Impact Assessment, in its simplest form, is a planning tool that is now generally regarded as an integral component of sound decision making. EIA predicts the environmental consequences of any development project & ensures that the potential problems are foreseen & addressed at an early stage of planning & design.
EIA attempts to identify, predict & assess the likely consequences of proposed development activities. A planning aid concerned with identifying, predicting & assessing impacts arising from proposed activities such as policies, programs, plans & development projects which may affect the environment – a basic tools for the sound assessment of development proposals to determine the potential environmental, social & health effects of a proposed development.
The Ministry of Environment & Forests (G.O.I.) vide Gazette of India S.O.801 (E) dated 7 th July, 2004 has made it mandatory to conduct EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) for: Any construction project falling under entry 31 of Schedule I including new townships, industrial townships, settlement colonies, commercial complexes, hotel complexes, hospitals & office complexes for 1,000 persons or above; or discharging sewage of 50,000 liters per day or above; or with an investment of Rs.50 cr. or above.
